#WellnessWednesday- Fanya Love's 7 Tips of Exercising Your Self Care At Work

So many of us are struggling at work and it can easily zap our day. The Queen of Self Care has provided 7 easy to follow tips to incorporate some "you time" in your workday:

1.  Take Your Breaks - Your work (and you) deserve to take your 15 min breaks and your lunch break. Do not skip out on the chance to step away from work and nourish yourself with food, peace of mind, and get fresh air.

2.  Use Aromatherapy - As long as it is not against policy, enjoy the different scents that you enjoy by using an oil diffuser. Another fun one is bringing your favorite candle to work and using a candle warmer so that you do not have light the wick. Let your office or work space take on a smell that puts you in your happy place.

3. Get Moving -  Yes you are at work and yes you are busy but do not allow that to be an excuse on why you can't get moving.

  • Bring your walking shoes to work and take a break from the office and go for a 15 min walk.

  • Take your favorite co-worker so that you can help someone else get moving too. When we walk, we are allowing the blood to flow to our brain, in turn, providing so many benefits for the arteries, the heart, and the hippo-campus (in charge of learning and memory).

4. Stay Away from the Toxic Co-Workers - Stay away from the gossipers, the negative Nancy, and those who drain your positivity. Going to work can be difficult enough and you do not need to surround yourself by negative elements at work. Take a look at who you spend your time with at work and if they fit any of these categories above, you may want to give that circle a break.

  • You are not exempt from evaluation! Evaluate if you are providing more toxicity in the work place and if so own it. Make changes by utilizing the the tips here in this post, change your job, or seek further help by seeing a counselor or therapist.

5. Stay Hydrated and packed with healthy snacks - Eat! You have a lunch for a reason and you have your breaks for a reason. You deserve to allow yourself a nourishing meal and snack. Remember what we put in our bodies is what we get back.

  • Limit the caffeine as it is known to change mood and sometimes not in the best of way. When we have too much caffeine we actually begin to lose focus.

  • Get your greens, protein, water, and good carbs in. Start looking up quick healthy recipes so that your lunch is prepared for the week.

  • Please do not forget your water. Drinking water helps our body function properly, keeps our heart on pace, and provides energy.

6.  Utilize Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) - Most Employers have an EAP program that allows you to talk to a counselor therapist free. You usually get 3 sessions. This is a great program to utilize when you need to vent or be heard about life, work, life work balance, and situations that have you stressed out.  Sometimes we need an objective ear to hear us out and take what we have to say seriously. You do not want to allow these stressors to build, as this could eventually open the door for burn out.

7.  Engage - Engage into projects your are passionate about at work. Work cannot be about the boring stuff or the hard projects. Yes, there are the projects we must do but why not ask your supervisor to be a part of some projects or task that you enjoy. A closed mouth does not get fed! When we talk with our supervisors about our interest then it opens up support for our career path in a positive way.

Thank you to Fanya for providing the tips above. Try these out and let me know: How do you plan to incorporate some of these tips into your work week? -R.
