Actor John Krasinski is saying a temporary "goodbye for now" to his successful YouTube channel that he launched in quarantine.
Some Good News (SGN) premiered on March 30, and, the premise revolves around a news show dedicated entirely to good news — which, for so many of us, served as a breath of fresh air in a time of uncertainty and tragedy brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. The very first episode featured a cameo from Krasinksi’s The Office co-star, the beloved and incredibly funny Steve Carrell and each subsequent episode following did not disappoint; including a virtual prom for the class of 2020 with performances by the Jonas Brothers and Billie Eilish. With only eight episodes recorded, the channel gained a quick 2.5 million subscribers and an impressive 67 million total views in less than two months.
On Tuesday, Krasinki announced that the show was coming to episode eight of eight, and then taking a break — but didn’t share any reasoning behind the hiatus. The final episode shared more good news about coronavirus survivors globally, and also took a look back at highlights from previous episodes — such as when the original cast of Broadway’s Hamilton surprised a young fan with a virtual performance, when Krasinski invited his fellow Office cast mates to celebrate the marriage of some lucky fans, and when SGN gave 2020 grads the opportunity to ask for advice from their idols, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Krasinkisi also premiered the Some Good News merch marketplace, featuring designs by the show’s community. Every dollar spent goes to the charity of each shopper’s choice — with the Starbucks Foundation matching the first $1 million of all funds raised, Krasinski said.
An emotional Krasinski ended the final episode stating:
"I told you from the very first episode, I only deliver the good news; you ARE the good news. And that's why every single week, if you can look past the goofy guy with half a suit, you would see what resilience really looks like. What unbroken really means. And through witnessing each and every simple act of kindness and generosity, you would see what the true definition of good really is."
In a time of such uncertainty, Some Good News is just what we all needed; mind, body, and soul. You can check out the eighth and final installment of SGN — for now — below:
